I’m writing another book
I don’t think I ever officially announced it in Tumblr, but Overlook Press is publishing my second book! This follow-up will take a broader look at how anonymity has affected society in politics, activism, religion, and art, but with a primary focus on the history of anonymity on the web. I hope to frame the book as a response to Randi Zuckerberg’s recent comments about how she’d like to see anonymity abolished on the internet, and address some of tension between privacy/free speech advocates and corporations like Facebook and Google who are struggling to define their stances on identity enforcement. I will present a broad, philosophical defense of anonymity and explore some of the tools and organizations that have arisen over the last decade to push against the mainstream trend towards cross-platform, transparent identity enforcement.
I am looking to interview people who have an anonymous/pseudonymous web presence. Specifically:
- comedian
- political pundit
- foster parent
- activist
- closeted teen
- abuse victim
- someone with an embarrassing hobby
- recovering addict
- someone with a stigmatic illness
- a whistleblower
Or anyone else who feels his or her quality of life would be greatly diminished if they were unable to express themselves anonymously on the internet. Are you (or do you know someone who might be) interested in contributing an interview?
